My Shanghai Daily Introduction

Doug Warner was born in Scotland in 1986. During his studies of International Politics at Aberystwyth University he tried his hand at a number of short lived occupations including work as a pharmacy assistant, hotel porter and, more excitingly, as a windsurf instructor in the south of France.

A brief trip to Beijing in early 2006 led to a fascination with the People’s Republic of China which was clearly strong enough to warrant his permanent relocation to the city of Suzhou almost as soon as his degree came to a close in summer 2008.

Since that time he has made exactly no use of his expensive university education and has instead occupied his time travelling across this vast country, usually by bicycle, and writing about where he went, what he saw and who he met.

In the intervals between journeys he relaxes on his balcony in Suzhou reading and drinking coffee or wine depending on the hour. In order to fund future adventures (and eat) he takes employment as a teacher in training centres and hotels across the city in addition to writing articles for both the Suzhou and Shanghai Daily newspapers and related websites.

In his free time he likes listening to music, photography and looking at maps.

Me representing the “Shanghai Daily” newspaper at a local tourism festival and being given a ‘key to the street’ which entitles me to a free 24hours in one of the areas many hotels as long as I write them a favorable review. In short, I’ve just landed my dream job - Hotel Critic.
